In this Phase 1 renovation, the homeowners sought to transition their Art-Deco-inspired apartment toward a more contemporary aesthetic. For both the office and laundry areas, we designed a sleek black-and-white motif that is reflected in the architectural elements, such as millwork and tile, as well as in the soft furnishings, including custom upholstery and rugs.

The millwork picks up on the black-and-white theme, featuring a black lacquer desk that seamlessly transitions into a reveal with which to open the cabinets. The black finish is carried inside as a hidden detail behind the white lacquer cabinet fronts, adding an unexpected touch. Strategically placed mirrors further enhance the design by creating the illusion of a larger space.

The clients expressed that they didn’t want to walk down their hallway and constantly see a black TV against a white wall. To address this, we proposed black leather panels as a sophisticated backdrop for the dual-purpose TV and computer monitor. The slim-profile shelving extends to the desk area, thoughtfully designed to accommodate a future printer if needed. We outfitted the desk drawer with built-in power for seamless charging and installed black-finished pop-up power, USB-C, and internet ports on the desktop—accessible when needed and discreetly concealed when not.

Restrained Elegance was an overall theme for both our Architectural & Interior Design choices. A muted, but refined palette of blacks, whites, & grays were chosen, as seen here in the furniture, lighting, and accessories.

Decorative, Task, and Accent Lighting were all thoughtfully considered throughout the small space, and individually controlled for maximum flexibility.

The Laundry Room was completely transformed, extending the black-and-white motif with a softer, more understated approach. Glossy white laminate cabinets were chosen for their durability and sleek finish, while the black interior detailing again adds an unexpected contrast. A durable porcelain tile accent wall doubles as a backsplash, adding a touch of style to the space. High-performance LG appliances and Dornbracht plumbing fixtures were selected to complement the design’s elegance while ensuring top-tier functionality.

A flip-up ironing surface was incorporated for convenience, while carefully selected artwork was added to enhance the space’s style. Lighting can be adjusted to fit the client’s mood.

To make the most of the space and enhance functionality, we extended the open counter from wall to wall, with a hanging rod above for added convenience. Every available area was used for cabinetry, maximizing storage and ensuring a clean, organized look

Every detail of the clients’ needs was meticulously considered and incorporated into the cabinetry, from accommodating the size of their preferred laundry detergent to mounting their Dyson vacuum in just the right spot, complete with an integrated charging outlet.
